Elephants, rainforests, lakes and nature adventures, what could be more fun?
Wildlife Monitoring Using Camera Traps
At Elephant Hills, our commitment to wildlife conservation is unwavering. In 2011, shortly after opening our Lake Camp at Cheow Larn Lake, we launched the Wildlife Monitoring Project. Our goal was to discover the various species that inhabit the evergreen forests of Khao Sok National Park. The remote channels of the lake, one of the world’s most pristine nature vacation destinations, proved perfect for this endeavor. With motion-triggered cameras hidden in the jungle, we have captured remarkable footage of wildlife.
Our research primarily focuses on the Bang Chong area, part of the Khlong Saeng Wildlife Sanctuary, adjacent to Khao Sok National Park. The results have been amazing, revealing the presence of threatened and endangered species such as wild Asian Elephants, Malayan Sun Bears, Gaurs, Asiatic Black Bears, Clouded Leopards, Malayan Tapirs, and Asian Golden Cats near our luxury tent floating camp.
Since the beginning of the project, we have closely collaborated with Khlong Saeng Wildlife Sanctuary, Khlong Saeng Wildlife Research Station, and Khao Sok National Park authorities. We regularly report our findings and share our camera trap footage with them, helping with their conservation projects. We believe that gathering information from this special area provides us with the tools and knowledge necessary for its preservation.
Currently, we collect our camera footage every other month, take notes during nature park treks, and evaluate migration patterns, reproduction probability, and overall gain a better insight into Khao Sok’s diverse fauna. We discuss the species captured in footage with the local Research Station, which helps us share valuable information with our nature enthusiast guests. Our guides receive regular training on Khao Sok wildlife and bird watching, significantly aided by the Research Station.
The recent trip was well-managed and ran smoothly, thanks to Elephant Hills, The Lake Camp’s coordination with the National Park, and the dedicated efforts of our team and participants, including a National Park ranger and the Elephant Hills team.
BECOME A PARTNER
We are currently looking for partners to co-operate with our Wildlife Monitoring Project through corporate sponsorship. Would you like to donate a camera trap to record the amazing wildlife in one of the world’s oldest rainforests? We and our nature-loving followers would definitely be thrilled to see the footage!
By gathering information on the flora and fauna in Khao Sok, we believe we can help the National Parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries with their continuous efforts to preserve this unique area.
Please contact us at projects@elephanthills.com to discuss the options.
