Veterinary students’ practical training at Elephant Hills
During this November we at Elephant Hills have been pleased to host 3 groups of veterinary students from Rajamangala University of Technology Srivijaya, Nakhon Sri Thammarat campus here in Southern Thailand. Altogether 37 veterinary students on their 6th year have completed their practical training at our elephant camp. Food, accommodation, as well as training and the venue were provided by Elephant Hills.
Students were introduced to our elephant camp by our resident vet Dr. Sujittra, and they learned about elephant health checks, nutrition, typical medical cases and diseases in elephants, and got hands-on training with basic procedures such as taking a blood sample. The professor and students were pleased with their experience and found it very beneficial for their studies. Some students who hadn’t considered working with elephants in the future, became interested in this career path during their visit.
In Thailand, there is an urgent need for more elephant vets, and we at Elephant Hills want to do our part in encouraging and inspiring students to work with these amazing animals once they graduate. Over the past years we have hosted dozens of veterinary interns in our elephant camp. In 2019 we hosted a Veterinary Workshop where elephant vets from all over Thailand gathered to discuss the best practices for elephant medicine and surgery.
