A school on top of a mountain

A school on top of a mountain 1

When arriving to Mae Sariang town in Mae Hong Son province in the North of Thailand, our Children’s Project team had a mission. We were trying to find some of the most remote schools in Pa Pae sub-district to deliver dried food, second hand clothes, books and toys as well as brand new stationery.

The paved road had changed into a dirt road quite a while ago, and we were driving through some rough, muddy terrain completed with sharp curves. We arrived in a small village and saw beautiful but very basic wooden houses along the mountain side. Passing several churches along the way, we knew that the villages are inhabited by Karen Hilltribe people, many of whom are Christians. We kept climbing higher and higher and were very grateful to be traveling in a car with 4-wheel drive.

Finally, we arrived to a school located literally on the top of a mountain. Amazing, panoramic mountain views spread around us, no matter which way we looked. We had a chat with the teachers and the thrilled children were already helping us to unload the boxes. Baan Huay Hak Mai Nuea School has 46 students, taken care of by 5 teachers. Although this school is in a very remote area, there are 9 students whose families live even further up in the mountains, hence these students stay overnight at the school during school terms.

It was obvious that this school rarely gets visitors or support from outside, and one of the teachers made a heart-warming speech after handing out the donations. Everyone was especially pleased and surprised to hear that most of the donations are from our generous guests visiting Elephant Hills from all over the world.
