In the first year under its new title of Responsible Thailand Awards (formerly Thailand Green Excellence Award), we were delighted to join the Wanderlust Travel Media and Tourism Authority of Thailand representatives at the rebranded award ceremony in November 2018.
Held at the ExCeL Centre as part of the World Travel Market London event, Elephant Hills were among nearly 70 entrants shortlisted across the award categories. The award for Eco Lodge was presented to us for the efforts put into creating an eco-friendly resort at our lakeside Rainforest Camp.
The second of our properties in Khao Sok National Park, Rainforest Camp is a unique, floating resort of luxury tents. Guests who visit Elephant Hills on a three day Jungle Lake Safari get the opportunity to stay in this setting for one of their two nights in Khao Sok, enjoying the stunning vista across Cheow Larn Lake.
As well as reducing our carbon footprint by harnessing both solar and wind power to create the electricity this site uses, Rainforest Camp employs a unique waste management system in order to avoid polluting our jungle. Alongside this we also have an ongoing focus on removing single use plastics and are looking toward the future with ways to protect our environment in the long term.
The work we are doing toward future sustainability is one of the areas that makes us incredibly proud. One of the ways we do this is by combating deforestation through the planting of trees, more than 6000 this year, ensuring that the animals which call Thailand home have a stable and increasing habitat. We also employ the use of camera traps in order to record and track the animals in Khao Sok as part of our Wildlife Monitoring Project.
Since these awards first began in 2007 we have been honoured with being named as category leaders five times, with 2018 being the fifth consecutive year. The judges comments were well received, with comments including “Elephant Hills is fully committed to sustainability and is a model for how a luxury travel experience can also educate and conserve.”
Being recognised in this way by such a respected group of organisations and consumers has been a fantastic way for us to bring 2018 toward a close, but we won’t be content to stop our work here; 2019 marks a new year for Elephant Hills and will bring with it new ideas, projects and an increased passion for all that we do.
