English books, stationery and much more delivered to Baan Don Chai Witthaya School
It has been fantastic to notice that many of our visitors take time to read through our “Pack with a Purpose” list prior to traveling to Elephant Hills. The list can be found on the Children’s Project page on our website. We are simply amazed by how many of our agents have also joined our efforts helping rural Thai children, and actively pass the list to their clients. After gathering and packing up some of the latest donations, we headed to the mountainous Mae Hong Son province.
Our mahouts, the elephant care takers come from this Northern province, and through them we have a close connection to this area. On this trip, we delivered donations consisting of sports equipment, gardening equipment, food supplies and of course plenty of stationery, simple English books, warm clothes and educational toys donated by our guests.
One of the schools visited was Baan Don Chai Witthaya School, which provides kindergarten and primary education for 134 students in Mae Sariang district. According to the teacher’s estimation, around 80% of the students are from Karen hill tribe. Four students travel such a distance to attend the school that they stay overnight at the school building during school terms and return back to their homes in the mountains only for longer holidays.
Quickly after our arrival to the school we were greeted by smiley faces and a group of students instantly offered to help unloading the boxes. Everything was received with much gratitude and the students were especially fond of all the colorful books and stationery. During our meeting, one of the teachers described their plans of using the seeds we donated to continue their gardening project which was currently on hold due to insufficient equipment and lack of water in the dry season. Sports equipment and food supplies are also constantly needed in the school, which is one of the largest ones in the area.
