What Is a Whycation, and How Does It Change the Way We Plan Holidays?

Whycation

We have noticed a change in how guests explain why they are coming to Elephant Hills. Fewer arrive with a fixed list of sights to tick off. More simply want to rest, reconnect, or step away from constant decision-making for a few days.

Hilton Hotels has a name for this shift in its 2026 Trends Report: the whycation. Travellers now plan around a feeling or intention, rather than a destination alone. We see it in the questions guests ask before booking. Increasingly, they worry less about what to do each hour. They ask instead whether the whole trip will let them switch off. That is exactly the brief a stay in Khao Sok National Park is built to answer.

We see this play out differently depending on who is travelling with us. Families often want fewer decisions to referee among everyone’s preferences. Couples tell us they want time together, not time spent comparing restaurant menus. Solo travellers want the freedom to relax without having to research every step on their own. Whatever the reason for coming, our camps are built to remove the need to keep choosing once you arrive.

What Is Decision Fatigue, and How Does an All-Inclusive Holiday Avoid It?

The Ultimate Whycation: An All-Inclusive Escape from Decision Fatigue in Khao Sok 1

We built Elephant Hills around a fully all-inclusive structure. We believe a holiday works better with little left to decide. Decision fatigue is the mental tiredness that builds after many small choices in a row. It is well recognised, and it can quietly undo a restful trip.

Every Elephant Hills tour is fully inclusive. We arrange accommodation, full-board meals, and activities in advance. We also provide an English-speaking, TAT-licensed guide, along with transfers to and from camp.

Once guests arrive, there is very little left to plan. Meals appear at set times, with no menu to weigh up. Transport is already sorted, and each day follows an itinerary we agreed with you before arrival. This is what a whycation looks like in practice at our camps. You decide the reason for coming, and we take care of the rest.

How Does the Ethical Elephant Experience Reflect the Same Low-Pressure Approach?

The Ultimate Whycation: An All-Inclusive Escape from Decision Fatigue in Khao Sok 2

Our Ethical Elephant Experience removes decision-making from guests in a related but different way. It happens entirely on the elephants’ own terms, not to a schedule guests must manage.

From 1 May 2026, we changed the format at our Khao Sok camp and The Bush Camp Chiang Mai. Guests no longer feed elephants by hand. Instead, guests help prepare food that is left at feeding stations within the elephants’ free-roaming habitat. Guests then spend time simply observing the elephants as they move, feed and interact naturally.

There is no performance to watch for, and no interaction for guests to initiate. Nobody is asked to decide how or when to engage. We think this suits the wider whycation idea of stepping back from constant choice. Children in particular benefit. There is no pressure to perform a task correctly or to hold an elephant’s attention. Watching is enough. For the fuller picture, read our recent article, why watching is the ultimate ethical elephant experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a whycation?

A whycation is a holiday planned around your reason for going, such as rest or reconnection. The destination comes second. The idea, coined by Hilton in its 2026 Trends Report, puts intention ahead of itinerary.

What does decision fatigue mean when travelling?

Decision fatigue describes the mental tiredness that builds after many small choices. Where to eat and how to get around both count. All-inclusive holidays reduce this by pre-arranging meals, transfers and activities.

Does an all-inclusive holiday at Elephant Hills include everything?

Every Elephant Hills tour includes luxury tented accommodation and full board meals. Activities follow the chosen itinerary. It also includes a TAT licensed guide and joint transfers to and from camp.

What has changed with the elephant experience at Elephant Hills?

From May 2026, guests no longer feed elephants by hand. Instead, guests help prepare food left at feeding stations within the elephants’ habitat. Guests then observe the elephants on their own terms.

Is a whycation style holiday suitable for solo travellers?

Yes. Elephant Hills tours are designed as soft adventure for all ages and fitness levels. The all-inclusive format means solo travellers have as few decisions to manage as anyone else.
